TwitterTravels.com is a project that was conceived in March 2008 in Tennessee by two aspiring writers who are active on Twitter under the names of jacklhasa and scarab. These two writers are traveling America to connect the real world with the Twitter world. The website is a travel log and collection of stories chronicling their journeys and the people they meet. These stories are told in the form of blog copy, short podcasts, and photos.
As Jack and Scarab travel from town to town, they have five objectives:
- Meet with and create a Twitter user group in each town they visit
- Leave the town in a little better shape than they found it by volunteering for some type of community service
- Cover a community event that is relevant to new media and Twitter users
- Write a review for review sites for each bar, tavern, hotel, motel, and restaurant they visit
- Add to the Twitter Travels travel guide to be published at the conclusion of their project
Support for the Twitter Travels project has been phenomenal! The TwitterTravels.com site went live in April and in its first month received 23,841 unique visitors from 23 different countries. At this time TwitterTravels.com is entirely financed through user donations.
Donations are accepted either in the form of cash through ChipIn or gifts through Amazon, com. TwitterTravels.com has received over $1100 in donations from 37 contributors since April 8th, 2008. (The original ChipIn expired on May 31st.) TwitterTravels.com is also featured on Guy Kawasaki’s site Alltop.com, a collection of all the top sites on the web and numerous other blogs.
At the conclusion of the Twitter Travels project, a travel guide will be published outlining the best aspects of each town through the eyes of Jack and Scarab and be available as free download on at least 30 blogs. The comprehensive guide will include places to visit, community projects, lodging, bars, and restaurants. In addition, the contact information for their Twitter groups will also be included. The user groups will be very similar to the Fark Parties, MTUB, CTUB, STUB, and the various Tweet-ups taking place across the globe.
